Today March launched “Hacks and Flacks,” our bi-weekly podcast where myself and Jim Young talk to industry experts and colleagues about all things marketing, public relations, media and communications. We’ll drill down to a particular theme or topic with each episode, hoping to provide you, the listener, with practical insights, tips and takeaways that you can apply in your own marketing or PR.

Why podcasting? Jim and I are both big fans of the medium, and as he wrote in a blog post back in September, podcasts are one of the most empowering and appealing forms of content out there. A great podcast can capture your attention like no other piece of long-form content, which is why I have no trouble at all listening to Dan Carlin discuss the intricacies of World War I  for three hours.

With Hacks and Flacks, we hope to keep things informative but entertaining − hence, the name. “Hack” and “Flack” are, of course, derisive terms for journalists and PR agents, respectfully, but we’re hoping to take the word back and embrace it as our own. You can let us know if we’re successful − we’ll post new episodes every other Friday right here on this blog. In this week’s episode, we spoke to Sam Whitmore of Sam Whitmore’s Media Survey about the relationship between tech media and the companies they cover. We then asked Sam if he feels startups − particular those in the entrepreneurial, disruptive tech space − really need PR to support their growth. We also talked to March’s James Gerber about his personal experiences supporting startups as a freelance PR consultant. Give it a listen and let us know what you think!
